THE ASSIGNMENT:  Take two cultures and create a banner that represents how their coming together would mix.

THE PROCESS:  I found various pictures on the internet of things that are symbolic to both American and Japanese culture.  I then decided to make two separate banners for this assignment, one of them would be a collage, and the other would be a design that incorporated both the American and Japanese national flag.  My first idea was to make a collage of pictures that represented both cultures, and I did this using the program called Gimp.  I saved the photos that I found on the internet to my computers desktop and then transferred them into Gimp in order to begin creating my masterpiece.  I never used Gimp before so it took me awhile to understand how this program works.  Probably about two hours of my time was spent trying to figure out how to use the program well enough to create my idea for this assignment. Once I had a good understanding of this program,  I then used the tools available to enhance/change the pictures in order to create the collage.  Once I was satisfied with the outcome, I uploaded the final product onto my WordPress page, and began to work on my flag design.  I found a way on Gimp to merge the American flag design with the Japanese design, and then crop certain parts of the flags that weren’t needed.  After that was finished,  I added some extra color to the flags using the paint tool, and uploaded it to my WordPress page.

THE STORY:  When I found this assignment on the DS106 website, I knew that it was going to be a good chance for me to use some of my creativity.  Due to the fact that I am an American who is now living in Japan,  I felt it only necessary to use these two countries for the culture clash.   While creating this assignment I learned how to use Gimp (which could be helpful in the future), and I am very satisfied with the finished product, although it took me way too long to complete.

THE ASSIGNMENT: The assignment was to create a warning label for things that exist only in movies or your imagination.

THE PROCESS:  The first step was to find a generic fire exit sign from the internet, and download it to my computer.  I then modified the image in a program called Gimp.  I cropped the top part of the sign and deleted it, then, used the lettering tool to create my own personal warning sign.  To make it look more official, I found a picture of a brick wall online,  saved it, and created the brick wall as a background layer in Gimp.

Here are the original pictures:

THE STORY:  I know the original assignment was to create a warning sign for something that happens either in movies or in your own imagination, but I chose to design a warning sign for something that may happen in “real life.”  I believe that social networking is becoming a major issue in the world, and created this warning sign to raise awareness to this “social problem.”  Imagine that you’re in a burning building and have 10 minutes to evacuate before the building collapses, (maybe not you personally) but I can guarantee that someone would want to log on Facebook or Twitter and share this tragic event before thinking about their own personal safety.  This is a PROBLEM people, always be tweeting, but don’t endanger yourself in the process.

To pay respect to Douglas Englebart ( inventor of the computer mouse, and the development of hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to GUIs), I’ve created a pokemon card in honor of his birthday.

THE ASSIGNMENT:

The assignment was to create a pokemon card using one of the internet pioneers as a theme base.

THE PROCESS:

This process was fairly simple and almost “dummy” proof.  I found a picture of Douglas Englbart on google images, saved the image to my desktop of the computer that I was using, then used the online program pokemoncard to upload the image and create the card.  All that needed to be done was to add information to the provided fields on the internet site, such as the pokemon’s strength’s and weakness’s, and then click upload. BOOM…now you have your very own pokemon card.  After that, you save the completed image to your desktop and upload the image into your wordpress acount.  The process takes about ten minutes to complete ( including uploading it into wordpress).

THE STORY:

I chose to create a pokemon card of Douglas Englebart because today is his birthday and it felt that it was only right to honor him in some way. Douglas Englebart was responsible for invention of the computer mouse, the development of hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to GUIs.  Happy Birthday, thanks for your contribution to computers and the internet we know today.

This process was fairly simple and almost “dummy” proof.  I found a picture of Larry Roberts on google images (Larry Roberts), saved the image to my desktop of the computer that I was using, then used the online program my poke card to upload the image and create the card.  All that needed to be done was to add information to the provided fields on the internet site, such as the pokemon’s strength’s and weakness’s, and then click upload. THE STORY:

I chose to create a pokemon card of Larry Roberts because he was responsible for directing the team who created the ARPNET.  I feel that Larry Roberts was very influential and set the standard for the internet that we know today.
